It is vital that parents help boys determine what, exactly, determines their sense of self-esteem. 

For many boys, having high self-esteem means having strength, power, and positive physical aspects (especially being stronger than other boys).

According to Ervis Staub, professor of psychology at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, "Many boys who become aggressive don't have the socially valued means to gain a positive image such as competence and good performance in school and good relations with peers."
